Nayan:
It had been three weeks since my life took a dramatic turn. I had just returned from the office when Papa approached me, his face etched with worry. He broke the news about Rajesh Uncle's sudden cardiac arrest and hospitalization. The gravity of the situation was evident in Papa's tone, and I could sense the urgency.
We immediately rushed to the hospital to check on Rajesh Uncle's condition. The news was grim – he was critically ill, and the doctors were doing everything they could to stabilize him. We spent a few hours at the hospital, offering what little support we could to his family. Later, Papa and Mummy decided to stay back with them, while I returned home alone, my mind reeling with thoughts of Rajesh Uncle's precarious health and Akriti's reaction to that.
I was desperate to reach out to Akriti, knowing she must be heartbroken over her father's condition. But despite my repeated attempts, she didn't answer my calls or return them. I tried reaching her throughout the night, but to no avail.
Eventually, exhaustion got the better of me, and I drifted off to sleep. The next morning, I woke up to find Mummy and Papa engaged in a hushed conversation on the balcony. Mummy's face was etched with worry, and Papa's expression was resolute, a look I knew all too well.
As I approached them, they beckoned me over. Their faces were somber, and I could sense the weight of their concerns.
"Nayan, beta," Papa began, his voice laced with gravity,
"Rajesh Uncle's condition hasn't improved. And...and there's something else." He paused, collecting his thoughts before continuing. Papa's eyes locked onto mine, and I could see the depth of his commitment. He told me about the promise he made.
As I reflect on my life, I've never felt pressured to marry due to my age. However, my parents have been encouraging me to settle down for the past four years. Despite their persistence, I couldn't bring myself to marry someone else when I had already given my heart to the love of my life.
My journey with Akriti began when I met her at the university in Ambala, where she was pursuing her Bachelor's degree. Rajesh Uncle, a close family friend and my father's best friend, asked me to meet Akriti there as I went to Ambala for some work.
Having only met his daughters briefly during my teenage years, I was struck by Akriti's captivating personality and carefree spirit.
They have shifted back to their hometown Purnia due to financial distress and we stayed at Patna only.
We instantly connected, and despite the distance between us, we made a conscious effort to stay in touch.
Looking back, I'm unable to pinpoint the exact moment when I fell in love with her, but it's been five years since our first meeting. I knew, without a doubt, that she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
We both longed to share our feelings with our families, but Akriti was waiting for the right moment. Her family wanted to marry off her older sister, Sandhya, first, and Akriti didn't want to upset that plan. Little did I know that fate had other plans in store for us.
Papa revealed to me that the groom's family had called off the wedding with Sandhya due to her family's inability to meet their exorbitant demands. This devastating news had taken a toll on Rajesh Uncle's health, culminating in his cardiac arrest. When my parents visited him in the hospital, they shared this heartbreaking story, and Papa seized the opportunity to propose an alliance between Sandhya and me.
I was stunned, feeling as though I'd been punched in the gut. How could Papa make such a life-altering decision without even consulting me? We argued vehemently, our voices raised in a heated debate. Papa's justification was that life was unpredictable, and he wanted me to settle down while they were still alive. According to him, Sandhya was the ideal match for me.
I was incredulous, my mind reeling with the implications. I steeled myself for Akriti's reaction, knowing she would be devastated by this news. But when I finally gathered the courage to call her, she surprised me with her calm demeanor. It was as if she had anticipated this turn of events or had been privy to some information I wasn't.
Her words that day still haunt me like a nightmare. With a desperation that shook me to my core, she begged me to marry her sister, convinced that this union would somehow magically resolve everything, including Rajesh Uncle's health issues. While I cared deeply for Rajesh Uncle, I couldn't fathom how this arrangement would bring me any semblance of happiness or justice.
Throughout this entire ordeal, my sister, Didi, was the only one who stood by me, offering unwavering support and understanding. She was the sole confidante who knew about Akriti and me, and she had been a rock, advocating on my behalf.
Didi had made tireless efforts to make our family and Akriti see reason, warning them that this arranged marriage would only lead to catastrophe. Despite Akriti's persistent refusal to acknowledge my feelings, I had been prepared to fight for our love, to find a way to make it work.
I had steeled myself to confront this situation head-on, prepared to reject the proposal outright. But then, my phone rang, and everything changed in an instant.
"Beta, it's time for the baraat. Let's go."
My heart sank, and my mind reeled as the reality of the situation hit me like a ton of bricks. The wedding was actually happening, and I was expected to be the groom.
